Lighting up the town for Christmas

A CANDLELIT procession featuring pupils from Trinity and Kennet Schools marked the start of the switching-on of the Christmas lights on Friday evening.

The celebrations took place in The Broadway, with a number of community groups taking part.

Visitors were entertained by Watership Brass, who played a variety of carols, and by the Kennet Amateur Theatrical Society, who performed their Christmas pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Aside from the main event, residents had the chance to try their luck at the tombolas and games available on the various stalls provided by local charities and organisations.

Churches Together in Thatcham provided mulled wine to keep people warm, while the Newbury Weekly News’ Over-80’s Parcel Fund raised money to help buy Christmas presents for elderly residents. The Christmas lights were switched by the mayor of Thatcham, Mrs Judith Gildersleeves. She said: “It was a very enjoyable evening and the event seems to get bigger every year. We would like to thank everybody who took part.”
